Being a father is a tough job. Most dads I talk with feel
the need of Daily Dose of Encouragement. (That's me,
too!) So, Pops, here's one for you today. With renewed talk
of a manned mission to Mars, this one caught my eye:
A child
wrote a letter to the president of the United States and
said, "Dear Mister President. I would like you to send
children to Mars in the next space ship going in that
direction. I would appreciate it very much if I could go."
The letter was signed, "One of your future voters,
Mitchell."
The parents
had attached the following note to Mitchell's letter: "Dear
Mister President: As the parents of Mitchell Miller, we
would like to give you our permission to send Mitchell
anywhere into space."*
Yeah, we all have
days like that as parents, don't we? On the other hand, a
friend who recently adopted his second girl from
China reminded me on Sunday, "The reason to hang in
there as a father is because our children really need our
influence."** Every day I see a 3x5 card over my desk
that simply says, "INVEST." Nothing brings greater returns
than the loving influence of garden variety dads and moms.
I'll try to remember that next time I feel like
volunteering one of my children for Space Cadet.
